Easy Ways to Perform Facial Exfoliation at Home

Having a clean and bright face is the dream of many people. As one of the steps in facial skin care, you can exfoliate your face at home. Come on, find out how to do it. Facial exfoliation is one way to remove dead skin cells. In addition, exfoliation is also beneficial to brighten the skin, disguise fine wrinkles, and prevent clogged pores.

Tips for Safe Exfoliating Your Own Face at Home

You don't have to go to a beauty clinic, you can exfoliate your own face at home. To be safer and not cause irritation, you need to pay attention to the following:
  • Choose exfoliating tools and ingredients according to skin type

  • The first thing you need to know is to choose the exfoliation method that suits your skin type. You can exfoliate your face mechanically or using chemicals. Face exfoliation mechanically for dry, sensitive, or prone skin, can use a washcloth or a clean, soft cloth. As for oily skin, you can use tools such as a special soft brush for the face, including those using a rotating machine. Scubbing also includes mechanical exfoliation that can be done, especially for oily skin. Normal and combination skin types can also use scrubs. However, this exfoliation method is not recommended for sensitive and dry skin. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) are chemicals that can be used for dry and combination skin. Oily and acne prone skin can use skin care that contains retinoids, salicylic acid, or glycolic acid. As for you with sensitive facial skin, you can use beta hydroxy acids (BHA).
  • Make gentle movements

  • If you use facial exfoliation with scrubs or chemicals, take enough and don't overdo it. Then exfoliate in a slow circular motion. When using a brush or washcloth, do it with a gentle stroke, forming even short lines. Do it for 30 seconds, then rinse with warm water until clean.
  • Exfoliate your face regularly

  • For normal to dry skin types, facial exfoliation can be done one to two times a week. As for combination and oily skin, exfoliation can be done as much as 3-4 times a week.
It's important to note, you need to avoid facial exfoliation if there are open sores or burns on your facial skin. Also avoid using exfoliating products for other members of the body to the face, because the formulation is different and can trigger irritation.

Utilizing Natural Ingredients

Facial exfoliation does not have to always use facial care products sold in the market. You can also make it yourself, with natural ingredients that are easily available, for example milk, honey or ground coffee. The following is an example of how to exfoliate your face using natural ingredients, which you can do yourself at home:
  • Mix ½ cup of granulated sugar and 2 teaspoons (tsp) of olive oil. You can also use ½ cup of ground coffee, 1 cup of brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of powdered milk and 1 teaspoon of honey.
  • After all tools and materials are ready for use, clean your face and wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Take enough mixture and apply it to the surface of the facial skin evenly.
  • Then, rub gently and slowly for about 3-4 minutes.
  • After that, rinse your face using warm water and dry.
  • Finish by applying moisturizer on facial skin.
So that facial skin is always clean, bright and well groomed, don't forget facial exfoliation as part of your skin care routine. If you have a history of allergies or sensitive skin types, you are advised to consult a dermatologist first, to ask about products and how to exfoliate the skin that suits your skin condition.
